Hello, woodshop people. I know I will need to complete the woodshop safety class and any other authorizations. However, I have not stepped foot in a woodshop since goodness knows when. I am very intrigued by the thought of making some craft tools, wooden knitting needles, looms, and drop spindles. Anyway, I’m trying to work out in my head which equipment I need to focus on for these types of projects so I can watch some videos and read the manuals.
Am I right in thinking that a shopbot can cut the basic shapes, and the lathe is where I would define the curves, etc? A drill to form the peg hole for a loom, but can the Shopbot do that?
If anyone is open to working with me to create my first set of knitting needles, I would greatly appreciate it and pay you for your time.
There are as many ways to make a thing in the woodshop as the are tools with which to make them.
The shopbot could certainly be used to cut out a shape like that but I think it would be easier and faster on a saw. (With the right fixtures, the whole process of making a knitting needle could be done on the shopbot, but unless you’re going to make a bunch of them, it would have to be just for fun to be worth the effort, imo.) You could then use the lathe to turn the blank into a long cylinder.
I missed woodshop authorization because my back is acting up so maybe it’s not necessary, but I wonder if someone would be willing to do a more in depth workshop in woodworking? I’m kinda worried about keeping enough knowledge from the class to feel safe operating things.
