Acrylic Masking for Laser Cutter

I’m looking to etch through the protective layer on an acrylic sheet to make a mask that I can paint over later. I went by Menards and picked up a sheet on my way home and realized that it has a plastic protective cover instead of the paper variety that I was expecting. From what I’ve seen online, it appears that it should be safe to cut through, but I wasn’t sure how well it engraves.

Does anyone have any experience making a paint mask by etching through that protective plastic layer? Would the plastic curl back? Should I remove it and put on contact paper or something similar?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I would not recommend engraving through the plastic layer. It tends to fuse to the acrylic. Masking tape or transfer tape generally work well.
