I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that keeping our ceramics studio, equipment, and tools in great shape is a vital part of our craft. It’s not just about creating beautiful pieces but also about maintaining the space that allows us to do so.
I’ll admit that I’ve been guilty of the occasional oversight—like forgetting to wipe down a table or leave things organized. To help address this, I’m making a concerted effort to stop my work early to mop the floor, organize supplies, and put away tools. I believe these small acts can make a big difference in keeping our studio welcoming and functional.
Since our space is 100% volunteer-based, it’s important that we all pitch in to take care of it. I encourage each of you to take a moment before you leave to tidy up your area and ensure everything is in its place.
I also wanted to give a shout out and thank you Russell and Thad for the time you dedicate to MakeICT. I appreciate the support as I continue to grow in the craft.
Thank you all for being a part of this amazing community! Let’s continue to support one another and make our studio a great place to create.
Thanks Jen! I am also grateful to Russell and Thad for all they do!
When I hosted the middle schoolers we stopped making things a full 30 minutes before our published quit time to clean up. That works out to 75% making, 25% cleaning, time to really check every tool, take turns at the sink, organize like crazy.
Have there been any recent misses that inspired this post? I learn different things from different people about things to look out for.
I have noticed an increased frequency of larger amounts of dried clay on the tables, floor dirty around the wheels, and tools stacking up in the sink. Not major items, but these do build up when not addressed. Thought a little reminder would help.

This should be stressed for all areas of the Makerspace. The Stained Glass Area has also suffered from people not taking the time to clean up properly, as well as care of the tools. Everything has a place to be, and the entire area needs to be respected. A bit of care and maintenance keeps the space alive!
Sadly, I think that the individuals that are doing the leaving, are not reading the forum. Because several of us have been coming in to find this and just cleaning it up.
