Hey guys,
So, there was an absolutely massive donation of powder for powder coating made today by PowderTech in Wichita… About 2800 lbs worth on 3 pallets.
I would greatly appreciate help re-organizing the metalshop and taking inventory of the powder this evening. I should be up there around 7pm this evening to start in on the fun.
So yes… There are more powder coating classes in the work, including some experimenting with different materials.

They did send me an inventory list, so hopefully that will help.
I’m trying to figure out a good way to store all of that powder. Given the weight of all that powder, I’m wondering if we’ll need to consider some heavy duty baker racks, or if there is a way to turn the pallets they are on into shelving.
You may need more pallets!
Okay, I am really impressed by PowderTech. I am definitely going to be see about having them coat the roadster when it’s ready.
They saw the post on the forum and reached out to see if we could use a couple 16ft tall pallet racks.
We’d have to modify the racks for the metalshop, and clean them up a bit, but I think those would take care of the storage issue. Anyone (with a trailer) up for making another run out to PowderTech?

I think I have an idea figured out to clear up some space that will definitely take more than one person to make happen.
What’s the plan for room 4? It’s already a storage space. Could its permanent role be that? There would need to be done ground rules put in place about what can be stored there and for how long, but that sounds reasonable to me.
That’s to be our main meeting room from my understanding. They are trying to get it cleared now so in the future we can have board meetings and quarterly meetings.
Room 4 is meant to be the ‘co working’ and town hall space. A multipurpose room where people can work together on large projects, host events, have large meetings, etc, similar to how the front half of the old makerspace was used.
We picked up all 4 sets of racks this evening! They filled the 20ft dovetail trailer and then some!
Also, for those interested, it sounds like there is already a couple people interested in doing a run of of large projects (that are a bit too big for our oven) in black with PowderTech.
For now, the racks are sitting by the entrance, but if I can get an early enough start Saturday, I may try to get at least one set up in the metalshop.
I am not surprised that there is already some interest in using one set of the racks in the garden space either as a giant trellis or the start of a water tower. Lol

We’ve managed to setup one of the racks and loaded it with all the powder.
We had to cut off the top 3ft to make the rack fit, but I think we might be to use the cutoff section for a table in room 4 whenever we get that room cleared out and turned into the co-working/gallery area.
We’re still trying to figure out how to organize all the powder, but we may end up finding some smaller tubs to help make it easier to transfer powder to the powder gun.
Also, we had the first of many more powder coating classes today.
A couple massive tables made out of racking would be totally awesome.

I kept humming that to myself while Steve and I setup the rack in the metalshop…
Also, big thanks to Joe, Cathy, and Ralph for all the help tonight setting up a 2nd rack in the basement! This one will help to store materials for other areas (like all that acrylic that has been sitting in the maintenance room), and with the addition of some grow lights, might end up being a great rental spots to get an early start on next year’s gardening season!
I think we have a plan coming together to put up the rest of the shelves in the maintenance room that will help free up some space in there, but it looks like we may have to find a new home for the table saw before we can really get things going in there.
Can we make and powder coat them a plaque for their donation?
