Wood Shop Sawdust

Does the sawdust get thrown out or saved for someone else? I would like to have it if I could.

Unless someone is purposefully collecting sawdust (like a bunch of cedar chips off the planer) in specific instances, the sawdust if emptied directly into the dumpster.

I have no problem with you taking the sawdust that we generate. However, please be advised that the composition of that dust cannot be ascertained with any accuracy. It may gontain glues, plastics, composites, and toxic wood species that are unfit for pet bedding or garden use.

Thanks for asking!

Thank you, it is for a compost toilet so anything will be fine.

Curious Question. Compost Piles work with a balance of Greens and Browns. Fresh Produce Trimmings are typically in the range of 1:10. Newsprint is 1:500 and Sawdust is around 1:800. The pile works best with a overall 1:40 or 1-60 mix. No pile is perfect. You still need to add water (Usually rain) and let it generate heat. I have a large compost pile and too much sawdust will require some Milorganite (1:1) to get it going.

TIA John

So my curious question is what is the composting toilet doing that my large pile is not?

One answer is that urine is extremely high in nitrogen, so carbon (sawdust) is used for balance.

Solid waste is usually already pretty balanced, but then sawdust is added to help control odor and compaction.

Green vs. brown is just a mnemonic for nitrogen vs. carbon. There are also wet/dry balance (as you mentioned) and aerobic vs. anaerobic decomposition considerations among others.

Mike,

Thanks for the info, You did well. I used the green/brown to follow KISS.

Human waste disposal instead of using the a sewer system. Not intended for
gardens unless you wait 2 years.
