Not MakeICT related, but Im wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to get wheat berries this spring? I dont want to order online because of shipping costs and I do prefer to shop local, so I was wondering if they might be sold at any farmers markets in the Wichita area?
Wheat berries to eat or to plant?
I should have clarified that! To eat. Ive been baking a lot recently, and learned that milling your own flour has a lot of good benefits like healthier, longer shelf life, better flavor, etc
I have purchased whole wheat berries at Asia Bazaar in the strip mall in the NE corner of 21st & Woodlawn (near Passage to India restaurant). They may have what you are looking for.
Natural Grocers, Whole Foods, or GreenAcres will probably have them.
Wonder if the girls at whats brewing can order 50# bag also Johnsons garden center carries brewing supplies
Try Glen’s Bulk on highway 50 west of Hutchinson, across from Stutzmans Greenhouse. There is also a store in Yoder on Yoder Road across from the school.
I just bought a 55 bushels of red winter wheat from a neighbor farmer. Id be happy to sell you some.
I will actually be looking for white but I appreciate the offer!
So what do you do with 55 bushels of wheat…

Like isn’t that 500 gallons? I am really curious, but you dont HAVE to tell me.
BEER of course
Saw some on Facebook marketplace
Its approx 3300 lbs! Slightly more than I was anticpating would show up on our property. Lol. Gotta love good neighbors! Uses… human consumption ie ground flour, wheat grass micro greens for juicing, (Im up for more suggestions lol) @Frank how much would you need to run a batch? We need to talk brewing again!
Animal feed ie mixed with other grains for our chickens and guineas. Winter ground cover for gardens. Currently, native birds are feasting. I guess we’re following the go big or go home moto. Lol… It’s just one small grain bin.
I would think 20lbs of grain would make a 5 gallon batch if doing an all grain beer.
My last batch of all grain barley came out a bit hoppy so i would need to try a good recipe before i cost you materials.
I saw those too but unfortunately those are also red not white
Ill bring you some so you can play.
Paula would you sell me a 5 gallon bucket of your wheat?
Of course!
Thanks Paula, I will bring a lidded bucket up with my name on it and let you know where it is. I like to grind wheat fresh for bread. All I have had lately is spring wheat from North Dakota. It’s a little different than the hard red winter wheat.
In order to brew beer with grain you have to sprout the grains first then dry them out. The sprouting releases the enzyme to convert starch to sugar. It’s a process but pretty easy.
