Table saw damage

If i recall it does but it is “motion activated”*.

We can add cameras, but I don’t want to go down the road of “hey security… go check out [list of things]” and I don’t want to compel security to do that either (as that was also being floated relatively recently).

What’s the point of having cameras if we aren’t using them? I’ve only asked for somebody to review footage twice including this incident. Is that a common occurrence? What’s the stated threshold for warranting security involvement? Should we just turn a blind eye to everything not involving death?

I spent an hour yesterday looking at footage and haven’t yet seen the culprit. I have to a to be at the space to view footage.

The DIY nature of our system has the advantage of being able to use many different cameras into the system and have them work. The backside of that is the system overall is not end user friendly. There are system (not Blink or any of those guys) that are more end user friendly and can handle the amount of feeds we want and the level of detail needed BUT those come with a big price tag.

I’m with Dave here, if we can’t ask security to review footage when an incident happens that is a clear violation of policy then what’s the point of having the cameras. If the cameras that we do have are not easy to review then we should have cameras that are easier to review. Priorities should be towards protecting the space, maximizing the efficiency of the organization and keeping people safe. All of these point towards a comprehensive camera system that is efficient to review.
There’s a real cobbled together poverty mindset here that we need to grow out of.

Thanks for looking.

I don’t know exactly as I’m not on security and most of the group is absent from this thread. The policy surrounding footage is very vague - CCTV Policy - MakeICT Wiki and the draft from last fall to update that went dormant after November.

We do have instances where security has reviewed footage and they have shared the results with the board. It takes a lot of time even when you can narrow down where something happened because getting a hard window on the time when most dumb#@R#$#$ery happens is really difficult. They don’t broadcast their work on the forum. Part of the issue is that a lot of the security team is also doing lots of other things at the space.

Darn.

I don’t think it was deliberate or intentional, but probably just lazy and inattentive. It still caused damage, but I just don’t think it was a willful action. And right now I’m certain they’re feeling pretty low.

The reason I’m commenting is that I want to share my gratitude and appreciation for those of you who follow behind the riffraff (of whom I am one!) with the pooperscoopers. I am thankful that you’re willing to go above and beyond to maintain/improve/mitigate damages and issues caused by benign neglect (or otherwise).

It’s a big commitment to volunteer just to be the responsible adult in the room, and fixing things or, especially, cleaning things, should not be an additional or common expectation.

We all need to be excellent to each other and do our part to make sure we leave a space as good as (or even better than?!?!!) we found it. This community and the resources are amazing, but it requires every member to step up and keep it as we would like to find it.

So, thank you to everyone who repairs broken stuff, who refines what we have with new saw blades or software updates, who picks up energy drink cans and then recycles them!!! … all the details which often go unnoticed and unappreciated… Thank you.

so,should someone make a motion or whatever to the board to consider getting a new security camera system rather than going with, what sounds to be a Frankenstein built camera system, that we have now?

Security would need to make that motion as a budget request.

Unfortunately, we determined that the damage occurred well before it was noticed. A better camera would not fix that issue.

A better camera system, not necessarily better cameras.

More storage capacity might be needed, especially if higher resolution is being recorded by better cameras or if more cameras are added. And seemingly, from what Ladeana wrote, if enough time has elapsed, we no longer have any video to review. Unfortunately storage has become pretty expensive.

A playback system that can skip periods of no motion would make searches a little less tedious. Possibly storage could be improved by re-encoding just video showing movement after a period has passed.

Obviously, recorded video is primarily a deterrent and there’s a cost that might not be justified to be able to rely on what’s recorded and retained when education about minimally good behavior isn’t universally adhered to.

Just my $0.05 worth (since pennies are no longer being produced).
