Rock River Rapids Cardboard Regatta

They just opened a splash pad at Boston last year.

YMCAs may be another option? Some have indoor pools so it doesn’t even have to be summer.

When the average income of 2 zip codes in that areas is less than $25,000 I don’t think they have the means to go to the Y but I could be wrong.

IIRC for events, the Y costs substantially more than a public pool.

@Malissa the YMCA has a sliding scale for membership, though there are other barriers which factor in.

I meant YMCAs for the regatta, not general recreation.

You may need to check with Lake Afton, they have some rules about what can be used in the lake, such as no jet skis.

I talked to insurance today. Sounds like they are okay with the event being at either a public pool or lake. If we do have the event at a lake, they do ask that all participants wear a life vest.

As far as future outdoor activities go, they do appreciate that we coordinate with them and would prefer not to hinder the fun of the event (within reason, and as long as open flames are not involved). So things like a nerf war or hosting a LARP event might also be within what insurance is willing to cover.

Thank you for taking the time to make the call and get the answers.

So we could have a nerf battle?

And I second what Patrick said, thanks for putting in the work!

Yup, nerf battles have been 'ok’ed

…even with @Domy 's new 3d printed nerf guns. Mwahahahaaa…

So… we could, in theory, have a mock CTF with foam swords and nerf guns…

My inner 12yo is talking with my inner 20yo to convince my outer todamnmany-yo to start an armory.

Looks like we need cosplay classes on weapons and armor

Check with Veronica and Alyssa on Sunday… That may be in one of their upcoming cosplay classes (or possibly be convinced to have one).

I did drive around a little today to see if we do have a decent place to try floating in district 3…

  1. The Boston Park pool really was turned into a cool water pad
  2. The creek behind MakeICT is pretty shallow by Woodlawn
  3. The park at Woodlawn and Kellogg does have a neat looking pond but has maybe 5 parking spots and is probably too shallow
  4. The pond at Textron might actually work if we can get permission to use it, but I don’t know if that’s a run off pond and there isn’t much shade around it.

I’m kinda thinking that the best plan might be to test the water worthiness of the boats in the creek behind MakeICT, and then have a BBQ out at Lake Afton.

… i wonder if we could make a fleet of rc boats to race down the creek.

There are big snapping turtles in the Textron pond. (And maybe swans… at least there used to be)

…snapping turtles add a whole 'nother level of excitement. Now it really sounds like fun :joy:

If we have someone in the Textron employee club (fitness center) we could see if we could use their pool at pawnee.

Afton only allows swimming in the designated swimming area as of a few years ago after a young person drowned there. I saw the rule as an over reaction and decided to stop taking my boat there. Not to ignore the undeniable fact that drowning is horrible. I’ve personally rescued 2 swimmers from drowning in my lifetime and always kept a close eye on everyone swimming from my boat. I did not need or want others protecting me by restricting my rights.

Well now that i got that out of my system… back to my point. Lol Boarding a cardboard boat without a dock might be difficult or impossible. The boat ramp area is probably not ideal but could work since they have a nice dock. I think its sante fe lake out near augusta/andover. They have a ramp and very little boating from my experience but i dont think swiming is allowed. I could be wrong.

Haysville recreation might be into making an event out of it. Heck derby might be into holding a new event if they know make ict will also be there to support it.

Who would be up for meeting tonight at 8pm to discuss turning the cardboard rigatta into an actual event?

I might have twenty minutes
