Musician/Artist Tours - Laser Cutter/Screen Printing

I would like to begin offering a specialized tour of Make ICT to local musicians/artists who would be interested in learning about the laser cutter and the screen printing shop.

I’m not sure if this would qualify as full authorization of either of those. But what I want to accomplish is showing artists the possibilities as well as having them walk away with some merch for their projects.

Last monday, I gave my friend Mike a similar tour and I believe it went well. I’d say he’d have the know how to be authorized on the laser cutter but not the screen printing room, as I don’t believe I covered everything there. Let me know if you’ve got any thoughts

This is a cool idea.

Technically, screen printing doesn’t have an authorization (see the full access policy within the wiki page) PrintMaking - MakeICT Wiki

For the laser cutter, I would check with @xrunner but I personally think having more people willing to teach a class is a good thing.

Printmaking does have an extremely forgiving access policy similar to what ceramics had back in the day.

If you are giving tours for non-members to show off what we have thats awesome! Remember to follow guest policy with that stuff.

As far as authorization for the lasers, they can not be peer authorized. By policy it requires authorized instruction via a workshop. Even then they require an active badge with the authorization to even function so having non-members authorized on them is a bit moot.

I’m certainly not going to gatekeep laser authorization if someone else wants to offer to teach it. But I think what you’re describing is more of a “make and take” class - where you set up some preliminary project but each artist can customize it a bit, no authorization granted or required just show up and make some things? I’ve done those before too… laser cut a word, engrave on a tile… you could definitely host a group and probably think of some really cool starter project!

I agree with @kim that it sounds more like a “make and take” class. Authorization for lasers basically falls to active members. @MAtherton is also correct that the groups would need to follow the guest policy.

I’m unsure about the lasers, but one definitely needs woodshop authorization to use anything in that area, class or no class.
Seems like they could be “helping” the host if a person unauthorized on the laser were to participate such an event.
Bands like shirts, for sure.

Screen Printing has a pretty easy authorization policy because there’s not a lot that can do wrong. For those interested, they can take a class, or make an appointment with me, personally (contact info on the board in the print shop).

We have a one color class on Monday (the 15th) and a 3-color print happening Tuesday evening that all are welcome to come see in action.
