Let’s talk about our areas.
Woodshop - Doug is an awesome leader but he could use some assistants!
Textiles - Same for Malissa.
Print shop - Marc would like someone else to volunteer to area lead. Please consider.
Metalshop - Josh does not want to be area lead again. We need a volunteer for this very important space. We also need some frequent users to consider how they can contribute more - it’s a demanding area.
Jewelry - We’re talking about smushing this one with metalshop. Thoughts?
Fab lab - Got some new volunteers on the signup form, I’m excited about this one.
Ceramics - Has awesome leadership and room to help, ceramics is great.
ERP - I wonder if we could combine this with fablabl someday? After all, the fablab stuff is for rapid prototyping also?
So that’s my summary of where we are at with area lead volunteers. It sounds like Printing and Metal shop are the biggest opportunities - please consider helping out with these areas this year!
I would be up for a merge with ERP though will need to consider space requirements
Well I was thinking organizationally, not geographically.
Geography would not be hard with the move coming up.
I think combining ERP and Fab Lab is a bad idea, either geographically or conceptually. Electronics should be split into its own area. The CNC machines in that area are neglected and in need of dedicated attention. And rapid prototyping typically refers to 3D printing anyways, so that never even made sense to me. The CNC machines could be split up into areas that make more sense.
I also think it’s worth considering the idea of having dedicated Laser Cutting and 3D Printing committees. I’ve felt for a while that “Fab Lab” is a bit too broad of a term for a single area. Entire makerspaces operate under that identifier.

Kim is right ERP doesn’t make much sense as an area, fablab, kinda doesn’t either. They were good for what we needed at the time but we can reorganize if we need to.
In the new format we should be able to easily form a cnc committee, a 3d printer committee, a lasercutter committee and an electronics committee.
I agree with @james.a.seymour and @Christian. I see no way to combine ERP and fablab into a single room or under one lead and be better off.
Electronics, RP and fablab are a collection of equipment, none of which has much direct cross use. If we took the two rooms 7 and 10 currently allocated for ERP and fablab, and broke up both areas to smaller committees (subarea). We could make better use the space.
I would try to break it up into a noisy room (lasers, a portion of the cnc machines, vacuum pump for resin casting), and a quiet(ish) room. I would have to mock them up to see what make sense in each room.
I like the way the ERP has benches with storage under them.
