FabLab Safety

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to send out a quick request. While taking out the trash and bagging things up, I reached into the bin and felt something sharp—turns out there was broken glass in there. Luckily, no injuries, but that could have gone very differently.

I’m guessing the glass wasn’t put in there broken but cracked after being tossed in. Either way, please, please, PLEASE don’t put glass—especially broken glass—into the trash cans. It’s a serious safety risk for anyone handling the trash.

A recommendation may be to put a “glass” bucket in the fablab for discarded glass.

Not victim blaming or whatever it would be in this case, but as a general rule, it’s never advisable to stick your hand into the trash for this very reason. Broken glass, old exacto blades, or any number of other dangerous items could be in the trash can.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Unfortunately there was no trash bag so I was having to dump the trash can over to get it into a bag. Just wanted to toss out a reminder and maybe see about getting a glass container for the space.

Just two cents thoughts.
