Learn to Solder, Surface mount edition: Make a LED Fidget spinner

This class will introduce people to SMD soldering, by making an LED Fidget spinner using SMD soldering. No programming, or prior electronics experience required. This will be battery powered.

This class will cover two ways of doing SMD soldering, using both a traditional soldering iron, and hot air soldering.

Kids are welcome, but they MUST be accompanied by parents/guardians, who will supervise them.

(Note, that the class says electronics room, but will be in a classroom, only some of the soldering stations will not be available in Electronics.)

Learn the basics to safely operate the major woodshop tools in this safety class, including understanding the limitations of each tool, the forces created when using the tool and how to maintain safe control for improved performance. Tools covered: SawStop table saw, drill press, band saw, router table, jointer, planer, miter saw, oscillating spindle and belt/disk sanders and scroll saw. Expect around an hour of walkthrough with our tools and equipment, followed by an OPTIONAL hour of hands-on practice with the tools aimed at those who have little or no practice with woodworking tools.

Prerequisites: Please read the woodshop tool access policy and safety requirements on the wiki page prior to coming to class. Safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, short sleeves • Advisable: Hearing protection.

Upon completion of the safety demonstration, you can use this woodshop equipment for your projects whenever you work at MakeICT as a member!

Introduction to Stained Glass Custom Class - Five three-hour sessions

Introduction to designing and building stained glass art projects in a one-on-one tutorial class. Students will learn fundamental safety for handling glass and the basics of designing, cutting, foiling, soldering, framing, and hanging Tiffany style glass art. Flat work, 3-D build, special techniques and finishing will be explored.

Tools available in the glass work area will include basic glass shaping hand tools, grinders, and soldering irons.

Lessons will be a combination of lecture and hands-on training. Lab time will be scheduled within the sessions as optional work periods, but are highly recommended for individual and small group learning of specific topics. A beginning project (including materials) will be given to all students during the initial session, with planning and beginning of an additional individual project of the student’s choice, to be completed by the end of the five session class. Materials for the individual project are the responsibility of the class participants. Special pricing or considerations from local sources for materials and tools may be available; check with the instructor for details.

Restrictions:
Due to the nature of the medium and processes being used, no one under the age of sixteen years of age will be allowed in the glass work area without PRIOR approval of the instructor.

Instructor availability:
Typically 30 minutes prior to class session, as well as additional lab hours as published. Additional individual time by specific arrangement only.

We'll cover how 3D printing works, materials used in 3D printing, importing 3D files into slicer software, and important techniques for successful printing. Each participant will get a chance to practice with the software and print a small object to take home. Sample models will be provided, but participants may also bring in an STL file of a small (~3cm3) object to try out.

Completion of this class will grant authorization for using the 3D Resin printers at MakeICT.

Please bring your own laptop if you have one. Laptops at MakeICT do not the software needed. Lychee Slicer and UVTools are the software needed.

Ceramics - Hand Building - Make a Mug

In this hands on pottery class you will make a mug or teacup using the slab building method. This will be a 2 session class, unless you elect to have the instructor glaze your piece.

During the first session, you will construct a darted mug or teacup, with or without handle. Together, we'll explore various decorating techniques including carving, texturing, or adding embellishments to your mug.

The 2nd session (glazing) will be held on specified Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. These are informal sessions available within a 2 hour timeframe. You are free to attend the glazing session that works best with your schedule.

After the first session, your piece will remain in the studio to dry (about 4 -5 days) and then bisque fired. Once bisque is complete, it will be ready to glaze. I'll send notification when your piece is ready to glaze and provide the glaze session schedule at that time. If you choose to have me glaze, your finished creations will be ready for pickup in approximately 4 - 6 weeks, depending on drying time and kiln schedules. I'll notify you as soon as your items are ready.

All materials - including clay, tools, glaze, and underglaze are included in the class price.

Wood Lathe Safety Authorization Class

Plan on about 3 hours for the Lathe Safety Authorization Class. Much of the information will be covered quickly, with handouts available. Key pieces of safety will be hands on with examples to hold and examine, and an opportunity for you to use the tools on a workpiece to make some of the things we discuss.

This class wiil be in the 2nd Room of the wood shop.

Safety issues will include:

- Basic Lathe Checks before turning it on.
- PPE for Turning and safe clothing around spinning wood or other material
- An introduction to safe tool usage for Carbide Tools and Traditional Tools with basic information on sharpening.
- Introduction to Mounting Methods for safely attaching the workpiece to the Lathe.
- Wood Selection, considering safety and where the wood is from. We will address the MakeICT Hazardous Material Policy and the
implications for woodturning. This would include working with damaged wood, such as spalting, bark inclusions and worm holes.
Additional PPE considerations and products to address various damaged wood issues.
- We will touch on safety while sanding on the lathe.
- We will touch on safety and choices of finishing products for turned items.

A Test Out Form of this Authorization Class is available.

Class size will vary based on the number of experienced SKW Members available to assist.

Woodshop Safety Authorization is Required
Woodshop Hazardous Materials Authorization is highly recommended.
